Eco-Comics Hike: Walk and draw with a plant ecologist

Walk and draw with a plant ecologist! Celebrate Spring with Girty's Run Watershed Association! Learn about plants along Millvale's Riverfront Trail with Mason Heberling, a plant ecologist, while you create your own comic book with Pittsburgh Comics Salon. We'll meet at the Pavillion in Millvale's Riverfront Park at 10am, and walk from there along the trail for about an hour. We'll return back to the Pavillion to finish the comic books and enjoy a light vegetarian lunch. All drawing materials and lunch will be provided for this family-friendly, all ages event. Girty's Run Watershed Association aims to provide fun and accessible events - for everyone. This section of the Riverfront trail is made of crushed stone gravel and paved surfaces. Please contact us with any questions about the trail or the event.   Mason Heberling is the Assistant Curator of Botany at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Mason is a plant ecologist whose research focuses on the complex effects of environmental change on plants in our region, especially non-native plant invasions in deciduous forests. He is also interested in the impacts of climate change on the timing of leaf out and flowering, effects of overabundant deer on our native wildflowers, and using the museum’s centuries old plant collection (herbarium) to study the spread of non-native invasive plants (and more).  A native of the Pittsburgh area, he earned his PhD in Biology at Syracuse University and his undergraduate degree at Penn State.   Pittsburgh Comics Salon is a cultural initiative dedicated to creating an ecosystem for Comics Making in Pittsburgh. The goal of the salon is to build solidarity, get new conversations started between cartoonists and comics-makers in the area and to push the frontiers of comics.   Girty's Run Watershed Association is an environmental conservation organization dedicated to promoting a just and healthy watershed system through advocacy, education, and conservation. GRWA is a volunteer, resident-led organization to promote the health of Girty's Run watershed, covering over 13 square miles and six municipalities in the North Hills.   This event is made possible through generous support from New Sun Rising. New Sun Rising designs and implements programs that create economic opportunity, solve social challenges, and strengthen the vibrancy of place. They build vibrant communities through culture, sustainability, and opportunity.
