      Somatic Automatic: an interactive public performance

      Performer , educator , improviser and movement artist Gia T. Cacalano and Visual artist, Performer , and educator, Oreen Cohen present an interactive work that sheds layers through somatic experiential bodily movements. During this performance, the audience is invited to participate in the drawing meditation or are welcome to spectate. The artists and audience will move alongside each other in gestural mark making meditation with charcoal. The resulting drawings will be transformed in a concluding collaborative live drawing and improvisational dance performance by Gia T. and Oreen. Live Sound by Jonathan Hodges. BIOS Gia T. Cacalano is a veteran movement artist , choreographer , instant composer , educator and performer currently based in Pittsburgh , PA. Gia spent her formative Years in New York City, earning her BFA in dance education / Master's equivalency in performance from Marymount Manhattan College (in collaboration with the Martha Graham School of contemporary dance in 1991. In NY, Gia worked with several modern dance companies, including The Martha Graham Company , Anna Sokolow, Mary Anthony , Alvin Ailey, and Jennifer Muller " The Works", among others. Gia also studied at La MaMa (NY) with choreographer and noted Butoh artist Maureen Fleming, and later with Poppo Shiriashi (Poppo and the Go-Go boys) Butoh company. In 2002, Gia began an intense research period in instant composing, studying with many noted International improvisers and multimedia artists. Gia has performed her work, held master workshops, and collaborated with film makers featuring her work at several acclaimed venues internationally. Gia is currently adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, physiology and physical activity. She teaches master workshops Pitt dance department (2005- present) and is a Resident Teaching Artist La Roche College Dance Department (2015 – present.) Gia is certified in Pilates mat and accredited 200 RYT EmbodiYoga; a somatic, Body-Mind Centering, Hatha Yoga practice. Gia's performance work is embedded and rooted in instant composition and multidisciplinary collaboration with a stripped-down approach to performance collaboration. Her interdisciplinary art practice spans the potentiality of material, body and space in sculpture, painting, drawing, public art, intervention and video performance. An ongoing project is “Darkest Dark” charcoal series that blends performance and automatic mark making gestures with the body. Currently, she is pursuing opportunities to expand this series of 2D works through collaborations in dance, animation and printmaking. Oreen received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture, 2014 from Carnegie Mellon University and BFA in Fine Arts at the University at Buffalo. She has held an active public art career over the past ten years participating and organizing exhibitions, residencies and public commissions nationally and internationally, including; Alloy Pittsburgh 2015, FIGMENT Sculpture Project on Governors Island NYC, Flint Public Art Project (Flint, MI), CerCCa Casamarles Residency in Catalonia, Spain (2012) as well as participated in the class of 2013 at the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
